Overview

This individual will be responsible for performing the technical aspects of assigned tests in compliance with GLP, USDA and AAALAC guidelines.

 

Position Details:

  • Schedule: Monday to Friday 7 AM to 3:30 PM
  • Compensation: $23-25 per hour

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic necropsy procedures, including euthanasia, dissection, tissue collection, and collection of blood.
  • Handles animals humanely.
  • Troubleshoots equipment and process issues.
  • Review laboratory documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance to procedures.
  • Orders and maintains an adequate amount of supplies.
  • Assist with specialized procedures, including perfusion fixation, collection of specialized body fluids, and specialized dissection.
  • Assists in document review and the updating of internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and forms.
  • May assist in training new staff.
  • May cross-train to perform Histology procedures, including trimming and processing collected tissues to slides.
  • May cross-train to perform Clinical Pathology procedures, including blood preparation and analysis.
  • May cross-train to perform other testing activities, including shaving, weighing, dosing, the animals.
  • Maintains study and department records using good documentation practices.
  • Normally receives minimal instructions on routine work and detailed instructions on new assignments.
  • Works under close supervision from supervisor or senior personnel.
  • Interacts with clients and/or auditors.
  • May be required to work Holidays and weekends.
  • May be required to work overtime. 
  • Contributes to the overall operations and to the achievement of departmental goals.
  • Thorough understanding of Good Laboratory Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to assist in other departments.

Qualifications

Experience / Education

  • Minimum 1 year of experience with laboratory animals
  • Animal Science background
  • Associates Degree or equivalent

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Mastery of intermediate SX/Necropsy skills
  • Proficient in Oral & Written communication skills
  • Need to be able to read, write and understand English
  • Proficient in Microsoft (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently as required.
  • Consistently follows instructions and minimizes rework

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work in a Lab setting with exposure to animals/biohazards/chemicals including formalin and isoflurane.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE: routinely gloves, lab coat, and safety glasses or goggles
  • Must be able to work in environment with minimal noise levels
  • Ability to stand/sit for long periods of time
  • Clarity of vision
  • Ability to identify and distinguish colors – As evidenced by passing a color blind screening test
  • Must be able to perform activities with repetitive motions
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs occasionally
  • Ability to crouch, bend, twist and reach
  • Ability to push/pull 50 lbs often
  • Inside working conditions
