  • Overview

     The Director of Virology has leadership responsibility for multiple sub-groups of the Virology Department, including but not limited to Standard Virology Operations, Advanced Therapy / Gene Therapy, Cell Biology, Virus Production, Thin Section Electron Microscopy, along with Technical operations and Assay Method Transfers.  The Director will lead the expansion of the Virology labs, implementation of new technologies and provide leadership and scientific expertise in all areas of the department.  In addition, they will support ongoing Cell and Gene Therapy Manufacturing projects.  The Director’s team will also interact with scientists across WuXi AppTec and provide scientific expertise into programs supporting all aspects of testing. The Director will interact with Clients, Project Management and Business Development to support successful execution of projects. 


    • Directs all Virology Testing operations and assigned staff (Standard Operations, Advanced Therapy / Gene Therapy, Cell Biology, Virus Production and Thin Section Electron Microscopy).
    • Lead inter-departmental meetings and discussions, communicates vision, strategy and departmental plans.
    • Devise and execute innovative strategies for new technologies, assays and regulatory trends
    • Develops budget and resource plans (people, equipment and laboratory space) based on business demands and is responsible for cost control of the Virology Operations Department.
    • Responsible for the department P&L
    • Defines Operational Metrics and Service Measures to ensure delivery of results to Customers is on time and in compliance with procedures and scientifically robust.
    • As assigned by Management, acts as Operational Leader in certain areas and assumes all associated responsibilities.
    • Directly involved in the decisions/activities to grow the business
    • Supports the sales team through review and development of technical proposals and client visits
    • Interacts with internal staff to identify assays requiring further improvement or development and oversees improvement of these assays.
    • Presents technical seminars at external professional meetings
    • Develop and manage relationships with clients to discuss project progress and present data to clients
    • Recommends hire/transfer/promotion/discharge and salary changes and acts on employee problems.
    • Conducts employee performance appraisals in a timely and objective manner.
    • Assures that laboratory personnel are following all company SOPs and safety rules.
    • May prepare and revise technical documents (Laboratory Protocols, SOPs, etc.)


    Experience / Education:    

    • PhD or equivalent graduate degree in a relevant life science discipline (e.g. virology, immunology, cellular or molecular biology)
    • 15 years or more of relevant experience
    • Demonstrated Leadership Experience
    • Laboratory Operations


    Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

    • Knowledge of cGMP guidelines is desirable.
    • Ability to make decisions based on a wide knowledge of factors where application of advanced or technical concepts is predominantly required.
    • Ability to evaluate technical data and write technical documents.
    • Ability to use judgment as dictated by complexity of situation.
    • Ability to work under limited supervision and to handle problems of a difficult nature.
    • Proficient in Oral & Written communication skills
    • Need to be able to read, write and understand English (Mandarin)
    • Proficient in Microsoft (Excel, Word, Outlook)
    • Travel is required 5% , Domestic/International, Daily / Overnight
