  • Overview

    This is a mid-level leadership position within Technical Development that has responsibility for developing upstream cell culture process platforms including adherent and suspension cell culture, vector production and transduction methods. In addition, this role will design and lead the improvement of WuXi ATU’s upstream process development capabilities.

    Responsibilities

    • Develop efficient and cost-effective 3D cell culture and bioreactor processes for cell and gene therapies, for various cellular types.
    • Optimize cell culture media.
    • Have oversight of cell line development as appropriate
    • Lead the cell culture team to develop and implement platforms and assist in technology transfer to GMP manufacturing facilities. Partner with China team as needed.
    • Interface with clients for pilot work as required. Guide technical team.
    • Lead IP development for cell culture processes in cell and gene therapies
    • Attend scientific conferences and represents WuXi to potential clients where appropriate.
    • Stay current on technologies to help maintain the organization’s long-term competitive position and profitability.
    • Ability to work in a team environment and independently as required.
    • May be required to work Holidays and weekends
    • May be required to work outside of normal business hours
    • Contributes to the overall operations and to the achievement of departmental goals
    • Perform job specific tasks in compliance with applicable Regulations, International Standards, and WuXi AppTec Policies and Standard Operating Procedures.
    • Thorough understanding of Good Laboratory Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices
    • Accomplishes staff results by communicating updated organizational information, job expectations & supporting their work
    • Plans, monitors, and appraises direct reports including performance competencies, goals & job results
    • Coaches, counsels, and conducts disciplinary actions
    • Develops, coordinates, and follows organizational systems, policies, procedures, and follows labor and capacity standards
    • Other duties as assigned
    • May be required to assist in other departments

    Qualifications

    Experience / Education:

    • HS Diploma or equivalent required and
    • 5+ years relevant technical experience and min 4 years Managing people
    • Ph.D. in Science and Engineering Discipline preferred; or combination of relevant Experience & Education
    • Mid Management level experience

    Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

    • Track record of successful development and tech transfer of high yield cell culture processes and cell culture media to GMP manufacturing
    • Experience in cell line development is a plus.
    • Understanding of the Intellectual Property landscape for the field.
    • Demonstrated ability for critical thinking and innovation
    • Proficient in Oral & Written communication skills
    • Able to understand and communicate risks, and develop and execute contingency plans
