    Xenobiotic Laboratories (XBL), a subsidiary of the Lab Testing Division of WuXi AppTec, Inc., is a leading contract research laboratory specializing in small molecule bioanalytical, drug metabolism, and pharmacokinetic services to the pharmaceutical, animal health and agrochemical industries.  XBL is seeking a Part-Time Vivarium Care Specialist I  for their PK Department located in Cranbury, NJ. 

    Responsibilities

     This job role will conduct vivarium and animal care, maintenance, and sanitation; including running a cage washer and tunnel washer.

    Essential Job Functions:

    • Under regular close supervision, individual performs routine vivarium care including sweeping and mopping, cleaning, washing/decontamination, and keeping areas organized.
    • Performs husbandry tasks including observations, rodent handling, cage changing, and daily cleaning of animal housing rooms.
    • Maintains feed, bedding, and vivarium areas.  Keeps areas stocked, cleaned, and organized.
    • Receives specific instructions on tasks and expected results from supervisor.
    • Maintains logbooks and forms in a well-organized manner.  All necessary documentation is recorded.
    • Complies with all safety rules, practices good housekeeping, and maintains a safe workplace.
    • Prepares for and performs animal arrival procedures (ear tagging, body weighing, documenting).
    • Loads/unloads and operates the cage and tunnel washers, and operates the autoclave.
    • Organizes clean caging and accessories; maintaining them in proper locations.
    • Decontaminates caging and housing rooms.
    • Performs routine maintenance on various equipment.
    • Assists with routine vivarium environmental monitoring (RODAC, pest control, lighting checks, etc.).
    • May assist with study preparation procedures (study caging, labeling, room preparation).
    • Performs laboratory waste management duties.
    • Keeps inventory of supplies and restocks areas when needed.
    • Works on routine assignments per written procedures.
    • Works under supervision from supervisor or senior personnel.
    • Ability to work independently or in a team environment as required
    • May be needed to work holidays and weekends when required
    • May be needed to work overtime when required
    • Contributes to the overall operations and to the achievement of departmental goals
    • Performs job specific tasks in compliance with applicable regulations, International Standards, and WuXi AppTec policies and Standard Operating Procedures.
    • An understanding of Good Laboratory Practices.
    • Other duties as assigned
    • May be required to assist in other departments

    Qualifications

    Experience / Education   

     

    Experience / Education:

    • High School or Associate degree. Knowledge of animal science, biology, or a related discipline a plus.
    • 0-2 years of relevant experience in animal care or related field, or equivalent.
    • An Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) is a plus but not required.
    • Any similar combination of education and experience.

     

    Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

    • Proficient in oral & written communication skills
    • Need to be able to read, write and understand English
    • Computer skills: knowledge of internet research, MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
    • Travel is not required
    • Ability to follow instructions to perform required procedures
    • Well organized, detail oriented, and adaptable to changes
    • Effective interpersonal skills
    • Good time management skills in order to perform multiple projects within deadlines
    • Ability to effectively prioritize the workload and manage changes in direction
    • Ability to work independently

     

    Physical Requirements:          

    • Must be able to work in a laboratory/cage wash environment with variable noise conditions
    • Must be able to work in a laboratory setting with exposure to animals/biohazardschemicals
    • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE
    • Must be able to work in an environment with variable noise levels
    • Ability to stand/sit/walk for long periods of time
    • Ability to lift 50 lbs routinely
    • Ability to crouch, bend, twist, reach, reach over the head, and pull/push caging, wheeled carts and racks
    • Ability to push/pull 50 lbs routinely
    • Clarity of vision
    • Ability to identify and distinguish colors
    • Must be able to perform activities with repetitive motions
    • Ability to climb ladders / stairs / scaffolding
    • Inside/outside working conditions
