Overview

The Automation Specialist will champion the transition of manual assays to automated platforms (such as Tecan Liquid Handling instruments) and associated activities. This position will be primarily responsible for leading the translation of Molecular Biology methods into automated workflow for nucleic acid extraction, PCR setup, etc. The Specialist is also responsible for troubleshooting scripts/ as well as instrument operations.  Responsibilities will extend to other existing automated instruments and include onboarding new equipment to meet evolving operational needs. The incumbent must be able to recognize and solve instrument problems to minimize outages. This position will oversee equipment maintenance and associated accessories and proactively manage the stock of parts and consumables. Must be motivated and be able to work independently to meet project goals.

Responsibilities

  • Provides automation operational support for the Analytical Development Department activities including program scripting, troubleshooting and new instrument implementation.
  • Creates new scripts or modify existing scripts in a timely manner to meet custom requirements of WuXi clients.
  • Supports automated assay development of Molecular assays and their operational implementation.
  • Identifies and deploys process/equipment improvements as needed.
  • Evaluates automated systems to optimize processes and ensure quality.
  • Provides frequent project status updates to manager and automation team members.
  • Stays current with new automation platforms.
  • Must be able to work productively with multiple stakeholders including clients and other WuXi departments.
  • Assures that all instrument and associated documentation is in an inspection ready state.
  • Provides support for automation inquiries during audits/inspections.
  • Leads installation process for new automated equipment and associated accessories.
  • Works closely with colleagues in a manner that fosters a team environment.
  • Authors cGMP compliant documentation for equipment and assay validation or qualification.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize deviation from accepted practice.
  • Works independently, receiving minimal instructions under supervision from senior personnel.
  • May be required to work Holidays and weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to assist in other departments.

Qualifications

Experience / Education   

  • 2+ years of relevant automation scripting/programming and hands on experience
  • Bachelor, Masters, PhD in Molecular Biology (or related field of science) or equivalent experience is required 

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Required – Hands on experience with automated liquid handlers
  • Required – Hands on experience writing automated programs/scripts
  • Preferred – Hands on experience with Tecan and/or Beckman Coulter automation platform/instrumentation
  • Hands-On Experience operating, maintaining and troubleshooting automated liquid handling instruments is required
  • Experience writing scripts/programs for automation is required
  • Must be able to work in fast paced environment and adjust to changing priorities
  • Knowledge of cGMP and cGDP preferred
